Guarana Battles Back to Win the G1 Madison Stakes for Chad Brown’s 100th Career Grade 1 Win

Guarana , a beautiful and powerful 4 year-old bay filly by Ghostzapper, battled back from the inside to overtake the speedy and talented Mia Mischief by 3/4 of length in the 17th running of the Grade 1 Madison stakes at Keeneland. Ridden masterfully by jockey Jose Ortiz, who led through swift fraction of 22.95, 45.92, 109.60 and 121.70 for the 7 furlongs until the classy Mia Mischief took the lead 100 yards before the finish before relinquishing the lead to Guarana, who battled back from the rail. It was the fastest running of the Madison stakes and gave Guarana her third Grade 1 stakes win. It also gave trainer Chad Brown’s his 100th Grade 1 stakes win overall and his 13th at historic Keeneland.
The older filly and mare division is heating up with the other top runners at the top of their form. Monomoy Girl, who captured the Ruffian Stakes stakes at Belmont Park today stamped herself as one of the leaders as she overpowered a field of four other runners in a quick 1:34.13 for the mile with her regular rider Florent Geroux. The win gave this stunning chestnut daughter of Tapizar earnings well over $3 million dollars and prepared her for her next start as she was ridden out past the wire.
In other news, Day 6 at OBS Under Tack show was canceled today due to electronic equipment failure from a lightning strike. Breezes will continue on Sunday July 12, 2020 for the final grouping of 2 year-olds in training before the sales begin on Tuesday the 14th through the 16th.
