Mister Luigi Wins Easily in Debut at Laurel Park

Mister Luigi Wins Easily in Debut at Laurel Park

Mister Luigi a recent sales graduate from the July 20 OBS auction, this impressive winner circled the field around the stretch turn as female jockey Katie Davis took control of the race with Mister Luigi. Having to go 4 wide heading into the stretch before drawing away to an easy 3 1/2 length win under a strong hand ride.

This powerful colt is by the 2004 Horse of the Year sire Ghostzapper out of the 6- time winner Getback Time, who amassed earnings of 384K during her successful career in California.

Owned by Lugamo Racing and trained by Salomon Sanchez, this classy bay colt was purchased for the bargain price of just 14K after running a quarter in a respectable :21.2 at the Ocala sales in July. For those of you who have been following my Auction 20 Short List from all three major auctions for 2 year-olds, this was my 4th winner.

Mister Luigi rewarded my backers handsomely as he paid $13.40 for the win. Lugamo Racing received instant dividends as they collected $18,810 for the victory in race 3 at Laurel Park. Time for the six furlong sprint was 1:11.54 as Mister Luigi went unclaimed while earning an Equibase speed figure of 73.

Katie Davis comes from a family of jockeys. Her father Robbie Davis, now turned trainer, was an excellent rider in New York. Brother Dylan Davis is having his best year finishing with 17 wins at the recent Saratoga meet. Older sister Jackie Davis riding at Delaware, Parx, and NYRA has accumulated 678 career wins to date.

In other racing news, Speeding, the Into Mischief filly who finished third in her debut on the turf, is entered on the dirt at Gulfstream.

Scheduled for race 6 going 6 furlongs on the dirt on September 18th, 2020. Speeding drew a favorable outside post position number 5 in a field of 10 in this 68K maiden special weight for 2 year-old fillies.

Princess Noor Faces 5 in the the Debutante Stakes

Princess Noor Faces 5 in the Debutante StakesPrincess Noor Faces 5 in the Debutante Stakes at Del Mar. The speedy daughter of leading Freshman sire Not This Time out of Sheza Smoke Show was listed as the 8-5 morning line favorite.

Coming off a stellar performance in her debut when she was never asked to run. Princess Noor will face the undefeated My Girl Red by Texas Red, winner of the Sorrento Stakes, who was made the second choice at 3-1.

Bob Baffert has this 2 year-old filly primed for for this $250,000 7 furlong Grade 1 stakes. Jockey Victor Espinoza will be back in saddle for Princess Noor’s stakes debut.

As mention in my previous post, Princess Noor was an OBS graduate that sold for $1.35 million dollars to Zedan racing when she drilled a quarter in :20.1 over the synthetic track during the under tack show in Ocala. It will be interesting to see who will saddle this speedball since Bob Baffert is in Kentucky and Assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes was taken to the hospital for a broken wrist in a freak accident as he was taking his Derby runner “Thousand Words” to the paddock at Churchill Downs.

The red hot leading sire Not This Time, is seeking his 10th win in his first crop of 2 year-olds.

Post time is 5:15 PM Pacific time scheduled for race 9 at Del Mar. Good luck to the connections and other fillies in the debutante Stakes.

Founder Finds the Finish Line at Saratoga

Founder finds the finish line at Saratoga to win his debut for trainer Chad Brown. Purchased from the OBS March 20 sales for 600K after drilling a quarter in :21 flat over the synthetic track in Ocala during the under tack show.

Reinvestment Risk by Upstart, also won in his debut for Chad Brown as well. (Featured in a previous blog) During the post race interview, Chad hinted that he had two more horses with talent by this Freshman sire Upstart.

Upstart, a New York bred, earned over 1.7 million while competing in open company against the best three year-olds in the country. Having won the Holy Bull stakes in Florida and the Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park while traveling the country. This consistent handsome black colt finished in money 11 out of 15 races while winning 3 graded stakes.

Facing a tough field of promising 2 year-old colts, Founder trailed the field as the two speedballs Newbomb and Happymac dueled deep into the stretch over a sloppy and sealed track.

Founder and jockey Jose Ortiz made their move from last to first by hugging the rail on the turn before darting out and around a few horses as he bolted wide in mid-stretch.

Still 8 lengths back, Founder ducked back in before showing off his explosive stride as he ate up the ground with each stride to nail his stablemate Highly Motivated and 2-1 favorite Newbomb at the final jump.

At mid-stretch, it looked like the 100k bonus would be awarded to Happymac as he collared Nextbomb at the 1/8th pole before fading to third. “Highly Motivated” closed to take the lead with 100 yards to the finish before Founder finally found the finish line as Jose Ortiz guided this green running Upstart colt to victory.

Runhappy Colt Targets $100K Bonus at Saratoga

Runhappy colt targets $100,000 bonus at Saratoga this Saturday, August 29, 2020. First time starter “Happymac” who was purchased from the OBS Spring Sale for $800,000, makes his seasonal debut for trainer Steve Asmussen, who seems to be loaded with the best 2 year-olds this Summer.

This may be the one to win the $100,000 Runhappy giveaway bonus that Mattress Mac is offering to any Runhappy 2 year-old to win a race at either Saratoga, Churchill Downs or Del Mar this season. The speedy bay colt worked a bullet in :59.44 breezing from the starting gate in preparation for this initial start. It appears that Runhappy passed down his blazing speed and striking good looks to this firster.

Handled by the deadly combination of Asmussen and Santana, Happymac is coming into this race off a slew of brilliant works under his belt. Having workouts at Ellis Park, Churchill Downs, and now Saratoga, trainer Steve Asmussen clearly has his eyes on the $100k prize plus the $72k purse for this Maiden Special Weight first time starter.

Happymac  made my short list as my 10th overall selection from the OBS Spring 20 auction. Hip 1266 stopped the clock in :20.3 during the under tack show in Ocala. Originally pinhooked as a yearling early last year for $125k and sold again during the September Keeneland sales for $360,000, owners William Heiligbrodt, Spendthrift Farms and Madaket Stables stepped up and pulled the trigger to land this Runhappy lookalike.

Runhappy stands and nurses from his legendary stall at Claiborne Farms for a cool $25,000 stud fee. Year to date, his runners are 1 for 14, his lone winner Libertyrun, broke his maiden at Indiana Grand on July 8th, 2020.

Del Mar MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT

Purse $55,000. (Plus $16,500 – CBOIF – California Bred Owner Fund). For Maidens, Two Years Old. Weight, 120 Lbs. (Non-starters For A Claiming Price Of $40,000 Or Less In The Last 3 Starts Preferred). . Five Furlongs. (Turf)

The long awaited debut for this standout filly by the red hot sire Constitution is finally here.

Purchased from the OBS Spring Sale for $450,000, this beautiful bay filly drilled an easy quarter in :20.4 during the under tack show on June 1, 2020. Freedom Flyer is a well balanced filly that caught my eye with her overall look and balance.

Freedom Flyer is out of a Carson City Mare Rebuke, who earned nearly $100,000 in her relatively short career. Having won half of her eight starts, Rebuke earned her highest Equibase speed figure of 106 in her final start in allowance company at Calder.

Constitution is enjoying another stellar year as a Sophomore sire with his Derby leading contender Tiz The Law, who is a force to be reckoned with the first Saturday in September. Constitution is currently ranked fourth on the second year sire list with 36 winners from 96 starters, trailing only Khozan, Tapiture, and Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh.

I’m hoping to see a repeat performance like Princess Noor displayed in her debut as Freedom Flyer prepares for her initial start. This muscular filly, is coming into this race with some sharp recent workouts on the dirt.

Jockey Flavien Prat will be in the irons for the 5 furlong dash on the turf.
